Instrumentation
Motorcycle instrumentation comprises all the instruments, dials and gauges that provide the rider with essential information on motorcycle operation, speed, engine speed and other parameters. Here are some of the instruments commonly found on a motorcycle dashboard:
Speedometer: Indicates the motorcycle's current speed, usually measured in kilometers per hour (km/h) or miles per hour (mph).
Rev counter: Displays engine speed, measured in revolutions per minute (rpm). It allows the rider to monitor engine performance.
Fuel gauge: Indicates the level of fuel in the tank, letting the rider know when it's time to fill up.
Indicator lights : Indicator lights to show various information, such as activated turn signals, high beam on, oil level, etc.
Clock: Some motorcycles are equipped with a clock so that the rider can keep track of the time while riding.
Thermometer: Indicates engine coolant temperature, helping to prevent overheating.
Gear indicator: Displays the gear currently engaged on motorcycles with manual gearboxes.
Trip computer: On some motorcycles, a display shows additional information such as fuel consumption, distance traveled, ambient temperature, etc.
Cruise control indicator (if fitted): Present on motorcycles equipped with cruise control, it indicates whether cruise control is activated.
Battery level indicator: Monitors battery charge.
Tachometer: Similar to a revolution counter, but measures wheel speed rather than engine speed.
Instrumentation may vary according to motorcycle model and type. Some high-end or touring models may also be equipped with navigation systems, integrated communication systems and other advanced features. Instrumentation contributes to rider safety and performance by providing the information needed while riding.
