Selection criteria for your motocross boots:
The choice of a pair of motocross boots is important to ensure the rider's safety and comfort when practicing the sport off-road. Here are a few criteria to consider when selecting a pair of motocross boots:
Level of protection:
Motocross boots must offer maximum protection against impacts and shocks. Check that boots are equipped with solid reinforcements at the ankles, heels and toes.
Size and fit:
It's essential to find a pair of boots that fit your feet and legs perfectly. Check that boots are available in your size and try them on before you buy to make sure they fit properly.
Comfort:
Motocross boots need to be comfortable to enable you to ride for long periods. Make sure the boots are well padded and offer good ventilation.
Some criteria:
Boot height: check compatibility with your knee pads
Ankle articulation: boots that are too rigid are not suitable for small feet, which will feel some discomfort.
Leather quality: The overall suppleness of the boot's leather will change over time, as the structure becomes softer.
Inner textile materials: Check the quality of the textile used and the presence of foam to increase comfort.
Presence of inner liner: Many models do not have an inner liner, but still offer excellent comfort.
Height:
Motocross boots must be high enough to protect your legs from stones, sand and mud. The ideal height depends on your morphology, but boots should at least reach the bottom of your calf.
Non-slip soles:
The soles of motocross boots should offer maximum grip on rough and slippery terrain. Check that the soles are properly notched and wear-resistant.
Durability:
Motocross boots must be durable to withstand the harsh conditions of off-road riding. Check that boots are made from solid, quality materials.
Brand and price:
Reputable brands are generally more expensive, but they often offer better quality and durability. However, it's important to choose a pair of motocross boots that suits your budget.
Sizing:
We advise you to choose a size above your usual size (everyday shoe size). Leave 5 mm between your toes and the toe of the boot. Leave a few millimeters of freedom of movement inside to allow for socks.
Waterproofing:
Thanks to the waterproof membrane, water won't get in. This membrane must be breathable. It is present on 99% of the models we offer. As far as leather is concerned, it's a water-repellent material only, so synthetic materials (plastics, phd) will take over in this respect. A boot will therefore use different types of materials to offer you perfect waterproofing.
Resistance :
Check for the presence of plastic reinforcements at various points on the foot and leg. Be careful, too much reinforcement on the top of the foot can make it difficult to shift gears.
Additional leather or plastic protectors, generally on the inside of the leg. They protect your boots from rubbing against the crankcase and frame.
General anti-UV treatment. This indication is given by the manufacturer. Without this protection, the colors will fade over time.
Fastening buckles. Plastic for entry-level models and metal for top-of-the-range models. Don't panic if you break one: most manufacturers offer buckles as after-sales service, and TONNYCAT can supply them on request.
Glued, screwed or sewn soles. The soles are the first elements to deteriorate, so a cobbler can reseal your boots. Alpinestars offers changeable inserts with certain models.
Smooth or non-slip soles. Smooth for track use, studded for enduro and quad riding. Spikes let you walk in the mud without slipping when pulling or pushing your machine in the mud.
Metallic toe reinforcement. Only available on sewn insoles. These reinforcements are also available for after-sales service! TONNYCAT can supply them on request.
To choose the right motocross or ATV boots, you need to be familiar with the different types offered by manufacturers! Here they are:
Mid-height or semi-mounted boots:
Waterproof and very comfortable
Good ankle and foot protection
For quad use and hiking
Non-slip lug soles
Few models are offered by the brands, but the excellent SHOT ATV QUAD 2.0 remain the benchmark, not to mention the ALPINESTARS DELIZE DRYSTAR.
ENDURO or "QUAD" boots:
Quad / enduro boots have similar characteristics to motocross boots, as they are also designed to protect the feet and legs of off-road riders. However, they also have specific features to meet the specific needs of quad riders.
Here are some of the most common features of quad boots:
Reinforced protection: Quad boots feature reinforced ankles, heels and toes for maximum protection against impacts and shocks.
Height: Quad boots are also high to protect legs from stones, sand and mud.
Non-slip soles: The soles of quad boots are designed to offer maximum grip on rough and slippery terrain, but also to provide a good grip on the quad's brake and gas pedal pedals.
Comfort: Quad boots are designed to offer optimum comfort, thanks in particular to padding and ergonomics adapted to off-road riding.
Flexibility: Quad boots are more flexible than motocross boots, allowing more natural movement and better control of the quad.
Waterproofing: Quad boots are often equipped with waterproofing systems to prevent water and mud from penetrating the inside of the boot.
