ALL ABOUT WIDENERS

WHAT IS A TRACK WIDENER?

A track widener widens the track of a quad or SSV, making the vehicle wider on the ground.

Track wideners come in the form of shims that are positioned between the wheel star and the rim to increase the distance between the two wheels.

Track wideners are purchased and used in pairs and can be installed on both front and rear wheels.

For optimum adjustment, we recommend that you opt for the same thickness at the front and rear, to maintain a uniform and proportional width.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF WIDENERS

There are different types of wideners, each with a different attachment system:

Wideners with stud extenders. As shown in the photo below, all you have to do is screw these extensions onto the original studs, then slip the widener on. Finally, the rim and the studs are tightened with the original nuts.

This type of widener is available in aluminum or PHD (see below: materials).

Bolt-on wideners: these wideners feature built-in bolts, enabling the widener to be fitted to both the star and the wheel.

elargisseurs ART alu         elargisseur ART monté sur un quad

Different materials are available:

PHD: High-density polyethylene. This material is extremely resistant and lighter than aluminum. Recommended for cross-country and superquad bikes.

For example: the blue or red XRW wideners below are today's best-sellers! Despite its low price, this product is really very reliable!

elargisseurs PHD XRW

Aluminum: the toughest material. Ideal for utility quads and SSVs.

For example: XRW aluminum wideners with  studs. Also a best seller!

WARNING, for this type of widener: Maximum tightening of the stud extender: 50 N⋅m

Wideners come in several thicknesses:

As QUAD and SSV specialists, we offer 8 widener thicknesses:

25mm: exclusively from MOOSE RACING in cut-to-size aluminum with integrated studs

30mm: from ART RACING in solid-cut aluminum with integrated studs

35mm: XRW in aluminum: dedicated to SSVs

38mm: exclusively from MOOSE RACING in solid-cut aluminum with integrated studs

45mm: At XRW, in PHD or ALU with extensions and at ART RACING in solid-cut aluminum with integrated studs.

OUR ADVICE

The most common thicknesses are 30mm and 45mm.

Bear in mind that the thicker the widening, the more stable (in terms of handling) your quad will be, but the heavier the steering will be. This is an advantage in a straight line, but can quickly become a bit tiring when cornering.

We recommend 45mm front + rear for most sport/leisure quads. AN XRW PACK IN ALU OR PHD WOULD BE IDEAL!

For a road / superquad version, you can choose PGS PHD 50mm wideners for the rear of the vehicle and XRW PHD 45mm wideners for the front.

For a utility quad, our advice would be to go for a widener with an integrated stud, like ART RACING in 30mm or 45mm, for example.

For SSVs like the RZR900 / 1000 or the YXZ 1000 or the MAVERICK, we recommend XRW 35mm wideners specially designed for these machines.

For other SSVs, ART RACING 's solid-cut aluminum wideners with integrated studs are perfectly adapted and reliable!

ATTENTION, for systems with stud extenders such as PHD XRWs: Maximum stud tightening: 50 N⋅m

USEFULNESS OF TRACK WIDENERS

By using track wideners you'll get a wider vehicle with a better wheelbase and therefore better handling that will enable you to tackle bends with greater efficiency and speed. They also give you much better control of your glide through curves. You'll gain in riding confidence on a perfectly stable quad that's glued to the ground! Make sure you choose the right wideners for your QUAD or SSV.

MEASURE THE HOLE CENTRES OF YOUR RIMS :

Definition:

The center-to-center distance is the distance between the opposing holes on a rim designed to accommodate the nuts.

It is imperative to respect this characteristic when changing rims or fitting track wideners.

The center distance is always accompanied by the number of holes in the rim parameters.

For QUADS or SSVs, there are often 5 characteristic center distances:

4X110

4X115

4x136

4x144

4x156

(See list of main center distances at the end of this topic)

FINAL TIPS :

If you regularly transport your quad on a trailer, make sure it's wide enough to accommodate a wider track.

If you usually ride in undergrowth or on very narrow roads, make sure you'll be able to pass once the quad has been widened!

When fitting your wideners, for even greater safety, don't hesitate to use LOCTITE for effective tightening of your   wheelnuts and studs. You can also use nuts with thread lock.

ATTENTION, for systems with stud extenders like XRW in PHD for example: Maximum stud tightening: 50 N⋅m

A final point on premature wheel bearing wear. It's true that the wheel offset observed after fitting wideners is greater than before! so the vertical force exerted on the bearings is greater, which will lead to premature wear of the latter. It's a fact, but this wear is very minimal compared to the riding pleasure you get from a stable, widened quad! In addition to having a very long service life, even with wideners, a wheel bearing only costs around twenty euros and will last several hundred hours.
