WHEEL CENTRES AND OFFSETS

HOW TO MEASURE THE CENTER-TO-CENTER DISTANCES AND OFFSETS OF QUAD RIMS :

Before you start choosing track wideners or new rims for your quad or SSV, it's essential to know the centre-to-centre distances of the stud holes in your current rims, as well as the offsets of these rims.

Drill centers may be the same for all 4 wheels, or different for front and rear wheels. You can find this type of information in your quad or SSV technical review.

If you no longer have this document, don't panic, here's a simple method for measuring your drilling centres.

1) RIM DRILLING CENTRES:

The center-to-center distance is the distance between opposing holes on a rim designed to accommodate the nuts.

It is imperative to respect this characteristic when changing rims or fitting track wideners.

The center distance is always accompanied by the number of holes in the rim parameters.

For quads and SSVs, there are often 5 characteristic center distances:

  • 4X110
  • 4X115
  • 4x136
  • 4x144
  • 4x156

2) RIM OFFSETS :

The offset is the distance between the mounting plane and the rim's plane of symmetry, or between the center of the rim and the mounting surface. It's also called Offset.

The Offset tells us how far the rim digs into the wheel arch.

The smaller the offset, the more the rim will stand out from the vehicle's silhouette.

Conversely, a larger offset will push the rim into the wheel arch, risking contact with the brake calipers or shock absorbers.

A reminder of rim size nomenclature: The unit of measurement is the "inch" ( 1 inch = 2.54cm )

Example: A 9X8 quad rim has a diameter of 9 inches and an overall width of 8 inches.

The offset of a quad or SSV rim is expressed with 2 digits separated by a + sign
If we add these 2 digits, we find the total width of the rim.

Example: A 9x8 rim with an offset of 3+5 has a total width of 8 inches.

Example: A 10x5 rim can have an offset of 3+2 or an offset of 4+1.

What does 3+2 mean? Here's a diagram to help you:

3) POSITIVE, NEUTRAL OR NEGATIVE OFFSET:

In these 3 diagrams, the inside of the rim (where the wheel star or universal joint is located) is on the left, and the outside is on the right.

schema des déport des jantes de quads

Zero offset: (example 4+4) The offset can be zero when the bearing surface is at the center of the rim.

Positive offset: (e.g. 4+1 or 6+1) This can be positive, with the bearing surface in relation to the center of the rim facing outwards.

Negative offset: (example 3+2 or 3+5) It can also be negative if, in relation to the center of the rim, the attachment surface is towards the axle.

4) OUR TIPS :

For quads and SSVs, the more negative the offset, the wider the track, so you gain in stability, driving pleasure and glide... but there's a "but"!

If the offset is too negative (i.e. your tracks are too wide), this can be problematic in narrow passages in a wood between 2 trees, for example, but also on your transport trailer or even in your garage if it's not wide enough!

The steering of your machine will be a little harder because the tracks will be offset. It's a choice you have to make.

Discs and calipers will also be a little less protected.

Many vehicles come with neutral or positive track offsets, but these can be modified to increase stability and glide!

What we recommend for an original sport quad :

  • an offset of 3+2 at the front on your 10X5 rim

  • an offset of 3+5 at the rear on your 8X8 or 9X8 rim

What we recommend for a sporty quad with a wide front axle, use a smaller front offset:

  • an offset of 4+1 at the front on your 10X5 rim

  • an offset of 3+5 at the rear on your 8X8 or 9X8 rim.

For a utility quad or SSV, we recommend a squared set-up, i.e. with the same 4 rims and the same 4 tires!

  • For the RZR, for example, 14x7 rims with a 4+3 offset would be ideal.

The vehicle will be stable with excellent traction. What's more, you'll be able to fit a spare wheel in any position!

We offer wheel and tire packages already mounted here.

We also offer original offsets (6+1) for your RZR!
