1 / What is the ECU?

The ECU (Electronic Control Unit) plays an essential role on a modern motorcycle/quad. It's also known as the ECU or ECM (Engine Control Module). The main role of the ECU is to control and manage various aspects of engine operation and certain motorcycle systems, based on the data it receives from sensors.

2/ What does the ECU do?

Here are the main functions of the ECU:

Engine control: The ECU constantly monitors data from sensors such as throttle position, engine temperature, atmospheric pressure and so on. It uses this information to determine the optimum air-fuel mixture, ignition timing and other parameters crucial to engine operation.

Fuel injection management : On motorcycles with electronic fuel injection, the ECU controls the flow of fuel injected into the cylinders in real time, according to engine requirements and riding conditions.

Ignition control: the ECU adjusts the timing of spark plug ignition to optimize combustion of the air-fuel mixture and improve engine performance.

Emissions monitoring: The ECU monitors the emissions produced by the engine and ensures that they remain within legal limits, helping to reduce the motorcycle's environmental impact.

Transmission management: In some cases, the ECU can also control the operation of the automatic or semi-automatic transmission, adjusting gear changes according to speed, engine load and other parameters.

Safety control: the ECU may be responsible for certain safety functions, such as traction control, ABS (anti-lock braking system) or stability control on some more advanced motorcycles.

In short, the ECU is essential for the safe and efficient operation of a motorcycle's engine. Thanks to its real-time control capabilities, it helps optimize engine performance, reduce emissions, and deliver a smoother, safer riding experience.

3 / why install a Vortex X10?

The Vortex X10 allows you to select 10 different ignition maps with a simple thumbwheel.
An optional handlebar switch allows you to "switch" between ignition map 1 and the selected map using the thumbwheel.

VORTEX X10 switch

- Up to 10 mappings selectable via CDI dial
- Dynamic selection of 2 mappings via handlebar switch (optional)
- 50% smaller: weight savings and easier mounting
- Plastic mounting bracket
- V-Boost : voltage booster to maximize energy at the spark plug
- High-resolution 3D mapping ( 8 curves from 0 to 100%)
- Programmable rev limiter
- Power Jet control with multiple trigger points.
- Reliable for racing

4 / How do I mount my VORTEX X10?

This video shows how to install it on a 700 Raptor 2022:

Step 1: Remove the quad seat.

Step 2: Remove the standard ECU from the airbox by unscrewing the two mounting bolts.
CAREFULLY disconnect the ECU's 26-way connector.
Note: These connectors have a locking tab which must be depressed before carefully disconnecting the connector.
BE CAREFUL NOT TO PULL ON THE WIRING FABRIC WHEN DISCONNECTING THIS CONNECTOR.

Step 3: Remove the Vortex ECU from its packaging and slide it into the Vortex rubber mounting strap.
Insert the ECU and mounting strap onto the supplied stainless steel mounting bracket and bolt to the side of the airbox.

Step 4: Carefully connect the main connector to the sub-beam of theVORTEX ECU and push firmly until
the locking tab engages.  Be careful not to dirty the connectors!

Step 5: Use colson-type clamps to secure any loose wiring.
Note: Do not over-tighten  clamps on wiring.

NOTE: There are additional cables coming out of the ECU, one is for ECU programming and the other introduced in ECU-6 version B is used for additional programmable features such as launch control, dual map.
Dual injector operation, etc.

Installation is now complete.

5 / how do I set up my VORTEX X10?

Note: This is a performance-enhancing product and is designed for competition use only.

MAP SELECTOR & FUEL TRIM Switch operation :

The Vortex X10 ECU has 10 pre-programmed power settings from "soft to wild".
By changing the position of the X10 switch on the ECU, the user can modify the type of power delivered for different rider styles or track conditions.

See the table in the map list for an explanation of the type of power expected from each setting:

In addition, there are three switches that will modify the fuel supplied to the engine via the EFI system.
These switches are distributed as follows:

LO: 5 to 25% throttle... (like a nozzle on a carburetor)
MID: 33 to 66% throttle... (like a nozzle on a carburetor)
HI: 75 to 100% throttle... (like a nozzle on a carburetor)

Each switch position is either + or - fuel rich in 2.5% increments.
The basic position is "5,5,5" with positions 6 to 0 adding fuel (richer) and positions 4 to I subtracting fuel (leaner) from the selected X10 map.
For example, if a fuel compensation switch is in position 6, 2.5% fuel is added to the selected map in that throttle opening.
If a fuel compensation switch is in position 3, 5% fuel is subtracted from the selected map's throttle opening.

NOTE: "LO", "MID" and "HI" switches are fuel compensations based on throttle opening, NOT RPM.

NOTE: It is not advisable to go further on any setting, unless you are an experienced engine tuner or you monitor the air/fuel ratio with a flow sensor/reader.
Air/fuel ratios in excess of 15:1 can cause severe engine damage.

We offer this unit for sport quads only.
