How to choose your motocross goggles?

Motocross goggles should be chosen according to several criteria:

- Comfort: if you're a long-time motocross rider, your goggles need to be as comfortable as possible;

- Lightness: the lighter your motocross goggles, the longer they'll last;

- They must fit snugly into your helmet, so they adhere well to your face;

- Frame strength: important for durability;

- The strength of the screen: it must resist projectiles and shocks in the event of a fall or collision;

- The screen(s) must be adapted to your riding style (tint, double-glazing, etc.);

- The adjustable strap must be wide enough not to slip over the helmet. It can be replaced as long as the frame holds out...

As a general rule, to keep your motocross helmets in good condition longer, you need to take good care of them. Carefully clean the screen. Don't use any chemicals, just a soft cloth, possibly with soapy water. Use the same type of cloth as for eyeglasses, which presents no risk of scratching the screen.

As far as possible, avoid wiping the inside of the screen to get rid of mist. Instead, try shaking the mask or rolling it gently to create a draught.

Let your motocross goggles in a well-ventilated area and not on a direct heat source. A radiator, for example, can prematurely damage the foams and strap, as well as distorting your screen.

Do all motocross goggles fit all helmets? If not, how can I choose the right model for my helmet?

Not all motocross goggles are suitable for all motocross helmetshelmets, as not all motocross helmets helmets do not have the same field of vision. So you need to make sure that the motocross mask you choose has the right proportion, and that it will fit snugly over your face without exerting any pressure on the helmet.

What does a motocross mask consist of?

The ventilation of a motocross goggle is designed to evacuate hot air from the top and let cool air in from the bottom.

The screen

There are several types of screen: tinted, transparent, smoked or iridium (see below), and their contours are fitted with foam of varying thickness, which influences comfort and the ability to absorb sweat.

Accessories

You can combine your cross mask with tear-offs, which you remove as they become dirty. To do this, you need to check that your mask includes anchoring points for tear-offs.

The more ecological roll-offs allow you to renew your field of vision, especially during competitions.

Is there a protection factor required on lenses for use in competition?

There is no mention of any obligation to wear children's motocross goggles in competitions organized by the UFOLEP, for example. However, they are essential for the protection of motocross and enduro riders.

Most motocross masks are anti-fogging. However, for official competitions, we strongly advise you to choose double lenses, which are highly effective against condensation.

When it comes to choosing the shade (see below), you need to take competition conditions into account. The more wood there is, the less light there is, so tinted screens are often less suitable than on more open terrain.

How do I choose the right lens tint for my motocross activity?

To begin with, a motocross goggle screen must not distort vision in any way: no distortion, blurring or magnification. And it has to be tough enough to protect you from all kinds of splashes, mud and stones, as well as the impact of a fall or collision.

The transparent cross mask screen for everyday use

A transparent or clear screen is suitable for use in all circumstances. It's the one that adapts best to all weather conditions. It is generally anti-UV and often anti-fog treated.

The smoked screen for resting your eyes

If your eyes are particularly sensitive to sunlight, a smoked screen will help you overcome the glare, as it is specially designed to filter out some of the brightness of the sun and "white" skies (when the sun is not visible but its proximity produces a fairly violent brightness).

A smoked screen must not degrade colors; it must filter, not blacken. It rests sensitive eyes. There are different shades of smoked screen to choose from, depending on the kind of light you're likely to encounter and the region you're riding in.

For those with poor eyesight, a screen that's too dark can impair your vision. If you wear corrective lenses, but even so, your eyesight isn't 10/10, beware of screens on smoked motocross masks.

Tinted screens for specific conditions

Certain colors have specific properties. The blue screen is ideal for winter conditions, when sunlight is low. The yellow screen enhances contrast in low-light conditions, such as fog. The orange screen, on the other hand, optimizes contrast when the sky is a brilliant blue, or on grassy surfaces.

Polarized lenses for relief

Polarized lenses are frequently used in winter sports. Its special feature is that it eliminates much of the reflected light, which is a great advantage on light or wet but brightly lit surfaces. With a polarized lens, you'll get a better view of the slope's contours.

Special anti-fog dual screen

The double screen works like double-glazing, isolating the inside from the outside. As a result, the inner screen is never cool enough to condense humidity, and no fogging can occur.

What's the benefit of wearing motocross goggles?

Whether you're riding your motorcycle in training or in competition, goggles are fundamentally essential, for two main reasons:

Eye protection

When your motocross helmet is open, your eyes are completely unprotected. These are highly sensitive organs, and any projection they receive can damage them, sometimes irreversibly.

Your eyes are exposed to the wind and sun, which puts them to a severe test and damages them over time. The sun's UV rays are extremely harmful to the eyes, even if we don't realize it at the time. Too much UV can lead to ophthalmic abnormalities and, over time, more serious conditions such as cataracts, AMD or, worse still, tumours.

Wind and rain hit the walls of the eye and, in addition to the impact, carry various particles, plant or mineral dust, which can potentially infect the eye.

Last but not least, motocross bikes are full of flying debris: clods of earth, mud, pebbles... and, in the event of impact, a pair of cross-country goggles is the only way to protect yourself effectively.
